They certainly can, and I would be one of the Canon fan boys to switch. Corporations selling legacy products typically are super protective of their products and accessories. I assume third party lens manufactures are the reason that Nikon wouldn’t want to give out their secret sauce. It’s just like with refrigerators, the most profit comes from selling a dollar charcoal filter for 50 bucks 20 times over the life of the refrigerator.

As for the cost, the adapter is machined out of 4140 steel which is quite harder to work with than the Aluminum that our AR’s are made out of. It also has multiple internal moving parts which have to be inlet for, with tolerances that have to be kept tight to insure proper lockup with repeated use. If you consider the cost of a US machine shop made compensator or brake, I think the price is fairly accurate when you account for the extra machining and parts fitting required to make one of the adapters. It is a purpose driven/Mission specific accessory and a useful one at that, just not one that everyone will want to pay for based on their own personal needs.

In my case, for instance, I have put years and years and thousands of dollars into building up my lens collection, mostly with Canon. I am perfectly happy with my current 5D Mark IV and batch of lenses, but of course, if I could use them all on a native Canon mirrorless system that was a significant improvement on my current camera, then of course I’d jump at the chance. However, if Canon releases a full-frame mirrorless system that still requires an adapter for legacy lenses and doesn’t guarantee full integration of all lens features, then I will have to think seriously about which way I go, for two reasons.

If I am getting the M camera it’s not to grow into the R or the EF system. It’s a small compliment to them so I can have a small camera AND small dedicated lenses like the days of the Pen F. It’s all small and does not need to be adaptable to big lenses . Canon will make a R APSC camera like the 80D or 7D some day perhaps but I like the small light weight M system.
