Another CCA, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, is “moving ahead with a plan to absorb an estimated $25 million in added fees that would otherwise fall on the agency’s CleanPowerSF energy customers next year,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The agency cited higher-than-expected “exit fees” that customers must pay when they leave Pacific Gas & Electric to join the CCA.

At the time, we thought the lead was coming from inside schools because the city of San Diego sounded certain that its pipes were no longer made of lead. But it turns out, as we reported last week along with NBC San Diego, the city does not know what 192,000 of its water pipes are made of. Nor does it know what 16,000 pipe fittings are made of.

While Canon missed the boat on a few specs, it’s still a very nice camera for anyone looking to move up from intermediate level DSLR bodies. It’s also pretty clear that Canon (like most flagship companies in their respective tech, e.g. Apple iPhones) almost always hold back some of the specs for refinement and integration on the next model release. I don’t blame Canon for this, it’s business, Sony did it too. Legendary reliability, professional quality images, and great lenses; it’s hard to complain with that from Canon. Give Canon and Nikon both a few years to integrate and improve specs. Anyone expecting the world’s perfect camera with Canon’s very first full frame mirror-less body was sure to be disappointed either way. I do not think this camera was designed for professionals looking to switch from top of the line DSLRs to mirror-less, it was intended for intermediate photographers looking to upgrade from mid-level bodies.

As for lenses, they’re probably terrific, and Canon claims they’re better than their EF-mount equivalents. Canon’s aggressively pursuing the fast-aperture segment, unlike Nikon and Sony did at launch. But there’s no affordable entry point to match this body, at least in the near term. Clearly they were designed with a subsequent higher-end model, or deeper-pocketed filmmaker, in mind. 

After several more years, when I finally gave up my manual focus FD system and looked to autofocus, Having to buy a totally new system, I was piqued enough at Canon to take a fresh look at Nikon (still the only major competitor for professionals)…and found Nikon’s limping transition to autofocus a confusing mess. You needed a score card to figure out which Nikon bodies worked with which lenses and how integrally each combination functioned. Minolta had the headstart on autofocus, but didn’t have a professional body or lens line. Leica was still pretending autofocus didn’t exist.
